Trip 051 - Rongomai & Honeycomb Tracks
DATE:
April 30, 2023
LEADER: Tony Timperley (03 473 7257)
TRIP GRADE: E-M (4-6 hours)
MEET: Woodhaugh, 9am
Rongomai Ridge from the Mountain Track (now Road) has been used by the club for many years, the first reference to it is in 1953 with a trip from Rollinsons (Swampy area) and Red Hut to Evansdale via Rongomai Ridge.
The Honeycomb Track is more recent (perhaps from the 1970s Walkways initiative?) and was first used by the club in 1980. As both tracks head from Careys Creek to Mountain Road, a loop from the creek is possible. About three quarters of the way up either of these tracks is a nature interpretive walk linking the two, which means the higher up exotic forest can be avoided.
Evansdale Glen was also a popular rock-climbing area for the club, with many instruction and recreational trips to the rock faces of the gorge undertaken up until the mid-1970s – after this the club concentrated on the Long Beach crags.
This trip will be going up the steeper Honeycomb Track first, before descending the ‘not so steep’ Rongomai Track – steepness in these valleys can be relative!
