Trip 086 - Pineapple Point Lookout

DATE: September 1, 2023
LEADER: Antony Pettinger (03 473 7924)
TRIP GRADE: E (2 hours walking time)
MEET: Booth Rd, 1pm or onsite at 2pm

September 1, 1923, was the day the Otago Tramping Club set out to tramp, with a Saturday afternoon walk to Flagstaff via the Ross Bush Track and Pineapple Point. Around 50 foundation members joined the trip, and the day was reported as ‘most exhilarating’.

Prior to the club’s formation Pineapple Point was well known as a lookout point, but the view has become lost over time with the relentless invasion of unwanted vegetation. Given the significance of the site, the club has restored the view and installed other improvements at Pineapple Point, including a seat and signage.

To celebrate 100 years of tramping, the club is officially reopening Pineapple Point 100 years to the afternoon since the first trip in 1923. It is believed that the Point will become a well visited location by walkers traversing the adjacent Pineapple Track. By using the original Ross Bush Track, a round trip from Glenleith is possible.

The opening ceremony will be held at 2pm – it would be great to have a large turnout. Given the significance of the date, this trip will be going ahead whatever the weather.

A further opportunity to visit Pineapple Point is available two days later (Sept 3), as well as the Saturday of the Centenary Weekend.
