TRIP GRADE: Moderate (5-7 Hours)
MEET: Clubrooms,
8am
The Ship at Anchor is a named rock tor, located on the Lammermoor Range to the north of Lake Mahinerangi. Since the first club trip here in 1993, the area is now included in the wider Te Papanui Conservation Park. As a result, this trip is a wonderful traverse across vast tussock country.
The trip starts from the end of the El Dorado Track, just beyond the wind turbines. After following a 4WD track to a water intake tunnel for Lake Mahinerangi, we cross the creek and then travel cross-country (no track) across a gully and upwards to the Ship at Anchor. The rock tor resembles the prow of a ship, and because a tarn has formed around the rock, the name The Ship at Anchor came into being.
From The Ship at Anchor we will drop down to some old gold workings in Barbours Stream, before following 4WD tracks back to the starting point.
The section within the conservation land is tussock with no tracks, although travel is not too difficult.
